[Binders](https://knowledge.corfix.com/articles/corfix-admins?hsLang=en#binders) October 27, 2026 # Why does my external Binder QR code ask people to sign in? ## This article will summarize why an external Binder or file QR code may still ask people to sign in, and how to set up your folders so anyone can open it without an account. **Important:** Making a QR code **External** does not override who is allowed to see the content. If the Binder, file, or any folder above it is limited to certain **Groups** or roles, anyone who scans the code will be asked to **sign in**. Corfix checks access **every time** the code is scanned, so a QR code that worked last month can start asking for sign-in if access settings changed. ### Overview An external QR code gives your Binder or file a public link. Think of it like a front door with a public address: anyone can find the door, but if a room inside is locked, they still need a key. In Corfix, the "lock" is a **Group** or **role restriction** on the content or on any folder it sits inside. When a scan hits a locked item, Corfix shows a sign-in screen instead of the content. This is expected behavior that protects restricted documents, not an error. ### When will people be asked to sign in? Anyone scanning an external QR code will be asked to sign in if: - **The Binder or folder, or any folder above it**, is limited to specific Groups or roles. - **A linked file** is limited to specific Groups, or sits inside a restricted folder. - **The QR code links to more than one item** and even one of them is restricted. One locked item makes the whole code ask for sign-in. - **Access was changed after the QR code was printed**, for example a Group was added, or the Binder was moved into a restricted folder. ### How to make an external QR code open without signing in 1. **Find the folder or file the QR code points to.** 2. **Check its access settings.** Make sure it has **no Groups** and **no role restrictions**. 3. **Check every folder above it**, all the way up to the top level. Each one must also have no Groups or role restrictions. 4. **If the QR code links to several items**, repeat steps 2 and 3 for each one. 5. **Scan the code again** from a phone that is not signed in to Corfix to confirm it opens. **Good to know:** For a Binder or folder QR code, restricted items inside the folder are simply hidden from people who are not signed in. They do not block the whole code. **Tip:** If some documents must stay restricted, move the documents you want to share publicly into their own unrestricted folder, then create the external QR code for that folder. ### Use cases and benefits - **Site postings for visitors:** put public safety info (site rules, emergency contacts, SDS sheets) in an unrestricted folder so visitors and inspectors can scan without an account. - **Protected internal documents:** keep HR, payroll, or management files in restricted folders.
