How do I automatically split overnight shifts at midnight into separate timecards?

This article will summarize how the new Auto-split overnight shifts at midnight setting works, how to turn it on, and what to expect on the timecards it affects.

Overview

When a worker stays punched in past midnight, their shift crosses from one calendar day into the next. Normally, Corfix keeps that as a single timecard — which means all of the hours land on the day the shift started, even the ones worked after midnight.

The Auto-split overnight shifts at midnight setting changes that. When it's turned on, Corfix automatically closes out the shift at the very end of the first day and opens a fresh shift at the very start of the next day. The result is two separate timecards instead of one, so each day's hours are counted on the correct day and in the correct pay period.

This setting is turned off by default, so nothing changes until you choose to enable it.

How it works (once enabled)
  1. A worker punches in during the evening and is still punched in when the clock reaches midnight.
  2. Corfix automatically punches them out at 11:59:59 PM on the first day.
  3. Corfix automatically punches them back in at 12:00:00 AM on the next day — the worker doesn't have to do anything.
  4. You'll now see two separate timecards: one for the hours worked before midnight, and one for the hours worked after.
  5. Both timecards display a crescent-moon icon in the Info column, so you can tell at a glance that they were created by the automatic overnight split.
How overtime and double-time are handled

Each of the two timecards is calculated on its own for overtime and double-time. The hours from the first day are not combined with the hours from the second day — each day stands alone. This keeps each day's totals accurate within its own pay period.

How to turn it on
  1. Open your Timekeeping settings.
  2. Find Auto-split overnight shifts at midnight.
  3. Switch it on and save your changes.
Use cases and benefits
  • Accurate daily hours. Hours worked after midnight are credited to the correct calendar day instead of piling onto the day the shift began.
  • Correct pay periods. When a shift straddles the end of a pay period, each portion lands in the right period — no manual adjustments needed.
  • Cleaner overtime and double-time. Because each day is calculated separately, daily overtime and double-time reflect what was actually worked on each day.
  • Easy to spot. The crescent-moon icon in the Info column makes auto-split timecards simple to recognize when reviewing or auditing time.
  • Built for night shifts. Ideal for crews running overnight, 24-hour, or rotating shifts where work routinely crosses midnight.
